Looking for a R200 (not R180) LSD rear gear set 3.9 or higher. Have a rear that appears to be welded so want to find something less harsh if possible. Know they make new sets but was hoping for a reasonably priced used set. Thanks.

This is for your Roadster?

No but would be neat to try to fit a IRS rear to a roadster. But have enough to do on that car already including fixing the 5 speed due to spun gear and getting a non IRS LSD rear fixed for that car.

This request is for a recently acquired 1972 240z track day car that I want to use for street/autocross. It was too good a deal to pass up. It has the later R200 rear but appears to be welded so any turning makes horrendous noises. Want to get it done so I can hopefully drive to one of the club events this summer. Any help on parts would be appreciated.

All I have for sale are stock 3.5 ratio, if that works.

Hoping for a ratio closer to 3.9 (or 3.7) Know it’s harder to find. May be coming back to you.

Our member in Rochester, John Taddonio, is selling a garage full of parts this year. He has rebuilt a bunch of cars so there is a chance he might have what you're looking for.

Did you ask John Taddonio? You can reach him on this website's PM board as ZCARNUT.

Yes I did, he has some stock open diffs in ratios I am not interested in unless nothing else available. Thanks for the info though.

I’m not we’ll versed on the r200… but I am very familiar with the r160 used in the 510.

It may be worth Frankenstein’ing a couple diffs for together. The tolerances on the r160s are so tight from the factory that in almost all cases you can pull the center unit from one diff and swap the ring gear on it and install it in that housing. The key is to keep the ring and pinion gear matched to its original housing and keep all the shims matched to their original housings - quite literally swap only the center unit.

I have built a 4.11 and 4.44 limited slip r160s this way.

I’ll have to do some more research on the R200s to see if they are the same.

If I find a Z I will be doing the same research as I will want to bump to a 3.9 or 4.11 rear end.

For what it's worth, I've known a couple Z owners who installed 4.11:1 differentials in their 240. Neither of them was happy with the result above 50mph. Even with a 5 speed, the car sang so close to redline at highway speeds, that road trips weren't enjoyable experiences. Fuel consumption was predictably bad as well. I drove both cars and there was no way to make the speedometer even near-accurate. I was showing 85mph on I-95 and got passed by a schoolbus.

For racing or AutoCross that ratio is fine, because the owners tend to trailer the cars. I undrstnd your goal is to build a track car so that's fine; just don't expect to be happy with those gears on the highway.

Not sure what an R-160 looks like, but if it has bolts on the side covers like an R-180, then it's nothing like an R-200, much bigger. I have an R-200, 3.5 ratio in my 240 now, and it's perfect with the older 5-speed. If I put my 3.9 in it the rpms are too high for highway use and you won't be happy. It is made for a 2.8 engine using the later close ratio 5-speed, then it will be perfect. The 3.9, 4.11 out of their normal configuration for racing purposes I do understand but not good for the street. So, the next time I install my 3.9 there will be a close ratio 5-speed and a 2.8 F54 block in the equation.
