$90,000 for a non-turbo T-top 280zx? Only a New Yawk dealer would have the audacity to ask that much for this car.  They are really trying to push the envelope in every direction for every Z car.See? This is why common people can no longer afford to become involved with the Z car. As our member Mike Engelhardt once lamented, the beauty of the Z was that the average kid with a 9-5 gas station job could afford to own all that style and performance. Now that they have hit 50 years, become classics, earned their own Concours d'Elegance and that Massachusetts "1971" (1970) car auctioned for $320,000, all the rest of the drivable Zs have become over-priced for 'real' people. |

The market has gotten crazy, that's for sure. Realistically I don't see myself ever being able to afford another Z like my 260 again, unless the market deflates quite a bit. I had this conversation with Frank before, and agree 100% that it's become very difficult for "mere mortals" like me to get into aZ car now. I always try to find the positive though, and in this case I see it as people are finally investing in their Z cars, and willing to fix up cars that in a different market would have become parts cars. When a car has little value, and is in need of expensive repairs it generally makes better financial sense to buy another one and scavenge the first for parts. My 260z is an example of a car that is benefitting from this inflation. So, while I likely won't be able to afford an early car again, at least there will be more preserved examples for the future. I figure this will create a nice selection of choice Z's for me to shop in the future. You know, when I finally hit the lottery.  Jay |

I just spoke ystrdy with the guy who will inherit my Z when I die. He was the guy who restored it when it came to him 30yrs ago. He had 4 240Z parts cars behind the barn and one night after a 6-pack he walked out and decided to restore one of them. He literally played Eniey-Meiny-Miney-Moe and chose my car from that process. It took me a couple years after I found it to convince him to sell it back to me, along with the original L24 and an L28, both rebuilt. He has since gotten married, had 3 kids and 2 jobs, and was calling me to update me about his new address. He has been too busy to keep up with the Z market for the past couple years, so when I told him about the 1970 car selling in Massachusetts for $320,000 and what my car is now valued at, he nearly dropped the phone. He had no idea the Z market had gone so nuts. Now it will be a challenge for him to actually drive his old Z car without fearing the loss of a classic. Gone are the days when you could buy an intact, worthwhile, running 240 for under $10,000. |

I think it's really cool that you've kept in touch with him, and are leaving it to him. I'm sure he understands how special that car is and what it means to you. I suppose he's the reason it was still around for you to find it again, so it is a fitting plan. Hopefully that won't be happening for a good long time yet. |

The Greed is killing me.  I guess I got the last deal on a Z I'm going to get. This for $3,000, and so it has 100k for miles and needs a little body work. For one mileage is not a big concern on a Z, and even though that one has only 5,000 miles on it, I bet all the rubber is dry rotted and every gasket will probably start leaking once you start to drive it. I could sink 20 grand into this and I will still be ahead on that car. I have a turbo, that one don't.
