I can't confirm this because I don't belong to eBay, but our Salt Lake City member Jason Winget writes me that an auction just ended for an early 240Z. The high bid was $58,400 and the owner refused to sell at that price. ( )

Folks, there may be something going on we don't know about.

If anyone is an eBay member, would you please look up 'closed auctions' and see the details on this 240?

Frank

That might be the one!

So, the guy is the original owner and thinks his 240Z has power steering, huh?

And it has non-stock wheels, 90,000 miles and needs work, but he expects to get $60K for it? Wow.

Don't remember seeing the Power Steering option on the spec sheet when I bought my '71 either.
I do think these cars are reaching a point in history where there will be more "boomer" buyers willing to spend big bucks on nastalgic rides that they remember during their youth. The Z was so darn popular that everone either had one or knew sombody that had one and its either now or never for them to purchase their dream cars. And they remember what a "Datsun" was!

Long live the Z car experience! :D

This fellow has been listing 240Zs on ebay for years, frequently changing is user name. I've written to challenge him on his "facts" on past listings and he responded in a not-so-kind manner. I strongly suspect that his listings are "fixed" with "friendly bidders" falsely driving up the prices.

Buyer beware.

What a coincidence! Several other Z aficionados have voiced the very same suspicion.

As you can well imagine, this car with a 2-digit VIN number came to the immediate attention of a few hi-rollers within the Z community. This car does not appear in the Internet Z Car Club's registry (which is inexcusable) and it does, indeed, appear that this seller's friends have intentionally boosted the bidding on this Z to about twice its actual value.

I notice a few odd things about this car, including the absence of the hand throttle lever. Those were standard issue for the very early cars (roughly the first 500), until we Americans began using it as a cruise control, which it was never intended to be. His pictures seem to intentionally avoid letting us look at the framerails, instead aiming the camera backwards from the 'important' parts.

The air cleaner wing nuts are the original "folded-over" variety, and a few other small items convince me the car is the real deal. But it's not worth $60K unless it was owned by somebody more important than we common folk are.
