People will complain that the flattop carbs were prone to after-boil and vapor lock, but they are the carbs which many racers want on their Zs. They had a "power valve" accelerator circuit which the roundtop SUs didn't have. It's a simple thing, merely a rubber flap which opens under acceleration to allow a bit of raw fuel into the engine to prevent over-lean bogging, but the earlier SUs just never picked up on that idea.
