JC Whitney [US Auto Parts] tells me they can supply an engine control module [Cardone brand P/N 72-3014] for my '78 280-Z 2+2. Their quote was for $266.00. I was told that the module and car has to be taken to a Nissan dealer to be programed which costs an additional $110.00 |

Programmed? Never heard of that. Better off buying a good used one. They were not prone to failing unless something like a battery shorting out on the hood or putting jumper cables on wrong. I might have one left, if you are sure that is the problem. |

They do NOT have to be "programmed", whomever said that wasn't even alive yet in 1978. The 280Z ECU was ROM (read only memory), very basic. I have a few of them, shoot me a PM with part number if still needed. |

Hi All I want to thank you all for your responses to my question on replacing the ECM in my early year 1978 280-Z. As it turned out the problem wasn't with the ECM. I called in to the WAMC radio Northeast report and spoke to a fellow named Gordon Fritchie who is on Thursday afternoon at 3:30 answering questions about automobile problems. Gordon had been educated in Germany and is well versed in the Bosch injection system. He thought my problem was with air leakage or an air flow problem. I went back to the car and started poking around. I found I could poke my finger through the bottom of the air flow meter boot which is between the air flow meter and the intake manifold. I replaced the boot and the car started right up. I bought it from Z car source of Arizona...nice people to deal with and the price was right. Thanks again for your help. Guy |
