I have a E88 head with a camshaft stamped CR286M.
I was told this is a high rev cam and not good for the street but I don't know much about it.
It was assembled by the team at Bob Sharp about 20 years ago and it's been in storage since.
I know there a few versions of the E88.
I'm not sure which one this is but the intake valves are 35mm and the exhaust valves are 41mm.
Give me an offer.

Does anyone know more about this version of the E88?
I can't find anything except there were different ones and the last one is more desirable.
This came off a 260 from what I was told.

The E-88 actually had 3 variations; a small-valve, a large valve, and some final evolution which I never learned about (you'd have to ask Vinny Bedini or Bryan Little). The small valve head was intended for the later 240s and the early 260s. The large valve head was a better-breathing improvement used on the later 260s and some early 280s.

I have one on my car as we speak. Mine has been extensively reworked, with bigger stainless steel Nissan racing valves, filled and re-ground combustion chambers (41.8cc) and has an Iskandarian .490" lift / 290* duration camshaft, titanium Isky valve train and gives me 10.3:1 compression with flat top pistons.

OK Rich, I did some checking on your head and you have a 1973/1974 260Z E88 there. The actual measurements for the valves are 1.65" intake, 1.38" exhaust (42mm/35mm).

The stock compression ratio was 8.7:1. If Bob Sharp people put a cam on it, they should have (probably did) raise the compression ratio by shaving/milling the combustion surface. That lowers the overall height of the head and cam slightly, which means they should have installed shims under each cam tower to raise the cam back up to the proper height. (If they shaved 0.10" off, they should raise the cam 0.10" back up). That keeps the timing chain from jumping its gears.

Here's what Jerry Jones has to say about the E88 heads, shamelessly stolen from (our member) Carl Beck's Internet Z Car Club website:
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
"E88 HEAD '72-'74

The compression ratio is around 8.7:1 for all of these years. This is where things get confusing. There are three E88 heads, one for each of the three years. The 72 differs from the '73-'74 mostly in the quench area. This is significant as the '73-74 head has a raised quench area that increases chamber temperatures for improved combustion. Contrary to what you might think this is not good for H/P. These are the least desirable of the Z heads and the only way to tell them apart is to identify the combustion chamber. I think the '73-'74 head only differs in that the 260 has a larger exhaust valve. The '72 combustion chamber is similar to the E31 with the hemisphereical quench area a little deeper than the earlier head. Some IT competitors prefer the early E88, citing that its valves are a little less shrouded than the E31. I've run both and saw no difference in ET's".
* * * * * * * * * * * * *

Frank

It will be interesting to learn what he finds when he pulls his E31 head off.
I want to know what's holding his intake valve open.

He said the seat may have slipped down.
I haven't seen that happen myself but I'm sure it's possible.
Does anyone know the dimensions of the interference fit of the seat?
Maybe after all those years galvanic corossion finally cought up with it.
Or it could just be FOD.
