Pull one of the lock cores and get the code. A good locksmith can cut a key based on the code as long as they have the books.

Had the same issue with 620 this year.

Key blanks are a problem. I have access to a source in Germany, but for what you will pay to get the blanks and have them cut to code, you are actually better off ordering an entire new lock set.

MSA sells door and ignition lock sets in their on-line catalog. In the meantime, you can start the car without the key if you need to. Rather than reveal that on the open website, I will send you a PM. I have been trying to get up with you a few times lately anyway.

Really? I have been able to get keys copied at Ace hardware for only a few bucks... they even have "Datsun" on them some times.

Are the Z lock cylinders that different then the 510 and 620s?

I severely bent the key to my 510 back when I was working in Bethel... I remember calling a local locksmith with the code, and he looked in his book and said "absolutely I can cut that"... unfortunately its been about 10 years so I dont remember the shop... it was an old hole in the wall place, one of those places that is just full of old stuff...

But just last year I had a local shop here in MA cut me a Key for the 620 from just the code - I bought the truck missing all keys. Hayden Safe & Lock Co in Salem MA

Quick search pulled these up ---

https://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/30-7457-58

https://zcardepot.com/products/key-igni ... -280zx-510

$10-12 a key blank...

But definitely worth checking with your local locksmith, cause I have had a few copied for $3-4 at Ace hardware ... None of my Datsun keys are original and I have a full duplicate set for both, and both have a separate door and ignition key since I have had to replace the ignition cylinders on both. So 8 Keys total HAHAHA

The Z keys are "left" and 'right' keys; you have to know what your lock requires. Blanks today are advertiZed for up to $100 each on eBay. Remember, the Z turned 50 last year, so they are now considered in Classic status. Plus, that 1970 car in Massachusetts sold for $320,000 last spring, pushing the cost of all other Z cars thru the roof. Parts increased proportionately. It is now actually cheaper to just buy a matched ignition lock and key than to find an authentic key blank and have it cut to an existing lock. And of course, not every ignition lock will fit every 240Z. They changed often during the entire production run. I know a Fall 1971 ignition lock would not work on my Apr/70 240.

Still, you could get lucky and find someone who has exactly what you need and doesn't know what has happened to the Z market in the past 10 months. 8)
Keep a good thought.

PS Mark:

Search the car for a keyset. Pull out the ashtray and look under there, lift the cargo mat and peek inside the two cargo storage bins. Feel under the cardboard glovebox for them taped up there. Look under both rear shock tower caps. Check the engine bay for them hiding somewhere. Open the fuel door and look in there. Take both seats out.

Pretend you're a teenager trying to hide contraband from your parents.
Previous owner might have stored them somewhere in the car.

Hmmm...

Looks like the keys linked above are available in both Left or Right Versions - but I do believe they are RePops. They do show that they are compatible with the 510, which is interesting... My 510 keys are different then my 620 keys so that does make some sense.

Here is a potential replacement ignition assembly as well - also noted it will work for the 510 which leads me to believe they are similar. But my Z knowledge is limited...

https://zcardepot.com/collections/ignit ... z-280z-510

I would still check with a local locksmith. If possible to find one of the older hole in the walls even better! They might have something laying around in the back. Its quite nice to have one key that matches all the doors and the ignition. I have 4 keys on my Datsun key ring unfortunately... 2 for each.

Maybe give these guys a call?
https://bradleylock.com/

They are close to you and look to have a nice store front, with A LOT of keys!

Vaguely looks familiar so its possible its where I got mine cut way back when, but no way I could be sure...

8 week old kid? Wow, congratulations! Last year's model, but still very low mileage!

Thanks! Just trying to do my part to raise the next generation of Datsun enthusiast! Someone needs to inherit my Dattos eventually... I have no plans of ever getting rid of them! I am putting my money on the bet that he is one of the only kids in his grade who knows how to drive a stick once he eventually gets his license!

I have a box of keys and it's pretty well known that keys fit other cars. It can be a little time consuming, but eventually you find a key that works.

Contact a local locksmith company, they probably have a solution to the issue.
