Well I for one was no help Jim, but I'm really glad to hear she's running well! It sounds to me like you fixed it.

That's god news, Jim.
So tell us again, what brand was the old pump and how long had it lasted?

Thanks, everyone! More good news: I took the car out again today and pushed it to the speedo's max and it drove beautifully! Looks like it's all set!

Frank: The old pump was the factory Nissan original, so it was a mere 40 years old but I can't complain about it's "early" retirement. At least it didn't simply die a sudden death and leave me stranded somewhere.

Next on my to-do list: check/adjust the timing - I just need to get a timing light first!

Thanks John! As much as I'd love an excuse to learn from a pro, I'm now wondering if it's even worthwhile to time the car. The engine has custom cams, so from what I've been reading, the factory timing recommendations would no longer apply. If that's the case, doesn't that mean my only option (other than dyno'ing it) is to simply tweak the distributor and road test the car to find the sweet spot?

That, according to other forums I've read may be the way to go Jim.

 Good Job :!: Glad that was it. :D As far as the timing with a new camshaft, just the lobes are different the gear is the same diameter, so I'll assume timing specs stay the same. With your own timing light you can try out different degrees and go with what runs best for you.

Jim, does your car have a vacuum advance on the distributor? If it does, you should check it as well for operation and possible leaks. I also have a vacuum tester if needed.

Thanks for the suggestions, John. It does have a vacuum advance...I've checked everything for leaks as thoroughly as I could (even using a makeshift DIY smoke leak tester) so I fairly certain it doesn't leak, not sure how to test to see whether it's working right, but the car is now running so well, I have no reason to think it's not.

After:
1. installing the new fuel pump,
2. installing in new spark plugs that had factory spec gaps in place of existing plugs with way smaller gaps,
3. adding a missing vacuum line from the BCDD to the intake manifold,
4. plugging a few small vacuum leaks, and
5. making minor tweaks to the AFM and the dizzy/timing
the car seems to be running better than ever.

Perhaps you'd be willing to take it for a drive and tell me how you think it compares with last time?

- Jim
