I've decided to post this as a "new topic" which is related to my earlier posts "Engine runs fine for a while then quits". If you wish to get additional information on all the troubleshooting I did leading up to this diagnosis, please check it out. This topic now pertains to the issues many of us are experiencing specifically with the aftermarket mechanical fuel pumps on the early carbureted Z cars.

After experiencing two pump failures in a row with the two Delphi MF0139 fuel pumps and another failure with a GMB 550-8040 pump, I figured that there is a major reliability issue with these aftermarket pumps. It seems that whatever supplier you try to buy a replacement pump from (AutoZone, MSA, Rock Auto) you get the same style pump identical to the failed ones I just mentioned. This includes pumps with company labels from Airtex, Carter, Spectra, Delphi and GMB. I've learned that most of these companies have been recently bought up by Trico and that most if not all of these pumps are now made in S. Korea.

I've contacted Carl Beck on this issue and he had discovered other Z owners experiencing the same high failure rates with their mechanical pumps. Carl has been in touch with GMB NA who has requested that we send back the failed GMB pumps for evaluation. At this point, I'm not sure whether GMB is the actual manufacturer for all or some of the other labels but I can tell you, they all appear to be identical. I just sent my failed GMB to them today.

Here is a brief history of the pump issues experienced with my Z:
I had installed an Airtex 1080 "gold top" pump in 2002 to replace my original 30 year old pump simply as a precaution. The Airtex ran fine for over 15 years without any problems. In 2017 I decided to replace the Airtex 1080 pump with a Delphi pump, again just as a precaution as I was planning some long road trips (including the laps at the Glen with our Rochester NY Z club friends). I purchased the Delphi MF0139 from Rock Auto and I thought it looked pretty good. However, this pump failed in only 27 months requiring me to have the car flat-bedded home this past March. I replaced the failed "Delphi" pump in March with another "Delphi" purchased from MSA and it failed almost immediately. In April I purchased the GMB 550-8040 pump from Rock Auto and it failed immediately. In May I purchased a Spectra Premium SP1203MP pump from Rock Auto which was supposed to be a "gold top" style pump much like my old Airtex, but it came in identical to the Delphi's so I never installed it. I then purchased a Carter pump from Rock Auto which was also listed as the "gold top" style pump but it came in identical to the Delphi. It is currently installed but I don't trust it.

Anyway, before any of you offer me any suggestions as to other possible causes of my fuel starvation issues, please check the topic I referenced above. I will update this post as soon as I hear anything from Carl or GMB.

Oh, and I purchased yet another pump on Ebay last week. This pump was listed as a gold top Airtex 1080. Let's see what arrives at my door! And don't you know, I threw out my original OEM and old Airtex 1080 pumps. DUH!

You answered my next question with your final sentence.
Don't you hate when that happens? We never need anything until the day after we throw it away.

I finally received my Airtex 1080 "gold top" style fuel pump that I ordered on Ebay :) . I installed it in the Z yesterday. It started and the engine ran fine on the driveway for about a 1/2 hour. I expect to take a couple of test trips with it in the next few days before I can give it the

I'm taking it out tomorrow (Monday) for a test run. I had too much fun with all the kids and grandkids this weekend.

OK, so I finally got the Z out today (Tuesday) for a test run with the Airtex 1080 fuel pump installed. I drove the car for a full hour (about 40 miles) on this warm humid day. Up hills, down hills hard and easy driving. All went very well, so I am starting to believe we have a winner here, even though I don't like the "look" of this pump compared to the ones I have been having trouble with. This model pump is identical to the Airtex 1080 I had on the car for 15 years. See picture attached/ Another couple of successful runs and my confidence it the car will be restored. :)

I agree that is one ugly pump, but beauty is in performance, like being married to a beautiful woman who can't cook.

I AGREE that what matters most is:

PERFORMANCE... PERFORMANCE... PERFORMANCE

Regardless of which you're talking about. Zoooom.

I took the Z out again today for a short 35 mile run. It ran great again, so I think we got this pump issue out of the way for now. I ordered another Airtex 1080 pump to have as a spare.

So, did your spare Airtex 1080 arrive? How much are they now?

It was supposed to arrive this past Saturday but USPS forward it to their Amerst MA center by mistake. It may come today. Still need to see if they shipped the correct model. Cost with tax and shipping was $40.
