I have a few questions about my 72 240... What is the best/recommended trans fluid to use? (manual 4spd) What is the best/recommended diff fluid to use? Where can I find the square tool to get the trans drain nut off? Thanks |

Hi RIF, Did you discover the 1/2" ratchet extension works pretty good? I've always used 80-90W gear oil in both my tranny and diff. I'd stick with a good brand like Castrol or Valvoline. My 240Z has 192K miles and no tranny or diff issues. Best to change the lube when it's warm. FYI, I also use Castrol GTX 10W-40 for my engine oil. The car still has "like new" compression and uses less than 1/2 quart in 3,000 miles. The valve train is spotless. No need for exotic lubricants or additives. Regards, |

I'll second what John said. My only addition is that the 80-90 gear oil you choose should have a gl-4 rating (soft "yellow" metal synchros). I was surprised at how few choices there are in oils that meet that spec. For engine oil I would say to use a zinc additive with your oil if you choose one that isn't already blended with it. Rotella 15-40 diesel and Valvoline vr racing oil both have it and work well. It's used to be a common component in motor oil and is needed for protection against wear on flat tappet camshafts. Jay |
