Last fall the A/c system on my '72 240z wasn't performing very well so with warm weather right around the corner thought I'd have the system's charge checked.
The system I have is an ARA aftermarket system that was converted to R134a in 2004 when the Z was being re-assembled during restoration. Classic Auto Air Manufacturing (CAAM) in Tampa FL retrofitted the ARA components for R134a refrigerant and provided the Sanden compressor. (Note: I still have the reciprocating R12 compressor if anyone needs a replacement) I spoke with CAAM today and they said the R134a charge should be 70-80% of the initial charge. Unfortunately I don't know what the initial R134a charge was. Their only other suggestion was to start with 17-20 ounces and see how the system performs. Only other thought I had was to check my records to see if I have info from the original R12 ARA system, there might be some indication of what the charge was for that system.
Anyone been down this road and can provide some guidance? In advance, Thanks for your time, help & info.

Best,
Chris

Make sure you have enough oil in the system, and not mixed with R-12 oil. A bigger condenser VS the R-12 condenser would also help. One from a ZX is what I will be trying out.
