Post subject:  Gunson Colortune?

Have any of you folks ever tried using the Gunson Colortune product as an aid in tuning your older Z car's carburetor fuel/air mixture? I've read articles, seen videos and heard both positive and negative feedback on this product. :roll: It does look like a technically feasible approach to achieving the right mixture by actually seeing the combustion flame change within the cylinders via a transparent sparkplug like device.

I never have John. I just use the unisyn and the old fashioned method. I do check the color of my spark plugs after tuning and driving.

I've heard both good and bad on the Gunson too. It seems like it would make life easier.

Got one a couple weeks ago. It works. Certainly needed for setting the idle mixture (I have flat tops). Helped me figured out that a had a bent choke cable on one of my carbs. Got it off ebay like 50$ after shipping. Also you can see if you have any misses since you are watching the fire.

Hi Jay,

Yep, I use the spark plug visual inspection also to see if I'm running rich or lean. My SU's seem to be right on the money as the plugs look good (light grey), but Bruce is now convincing me that the Colortune might help me get the SU's tweeked to the optimum mixture. I kinda like the technology and just may have to try it. I guess you would check #2 and #5 cylinders as these would be the middle cylinders supplied with fuel/air by each SU using the stock input manifold?

That's a good deal, best I can find was $75......It's also mesmerizing watching the flame. :thumbs_up:
