Post subject:  Wiper arm assembly parts
I'm rebuilding my whole mechanical assembly and have a question about the spring in the main crank. What's it for and how does it work? I can't figure out if it's in torsion or compression. It's just laying between the sheet metal part the looks like the millennium falcon and a flat washer. It almost looks like there's a hooked end that's worn off that maybe fits in the slot. Anyone know? I have a spare one and it's the same except for a plastic ring around the spring. I added a picture of my little artist who is turning 4 this month.

I just Googled "datsun Z Windshield wiper mechanism" and got about 200 photos, but none of them shows your items:

Please be advised that some very knowledgeable Z aficionados have replaced their entire wiper system with newer Mazda stuff; it fits right in there and works very well. Also be advised that you can't usually swap any Datsun electrical parts year-to-year because they improved so much so quickly in the '70/'71 cars. Any combination of years btw the motor and switch (for example) is bound to give you erratic performance.

Now, if you ask me about painting in the kitchen (and the dining room, and the upstairs bedroom) at age four I can tell you plenty of stories, but they don't involve an easel or a bib. My bottom still hurts if I sit the wrong way, and I learned a whole new vocabulary that day.

I have a friend who has a complete NOS, never used S30 wiper transmission mechanism if anyone is interested. Still in the box.....

Frank I think we had the same painting history.
I'm just using this one since it worked before. The spring is just a mystery and as you know I need to know how everything works. I can't believe how hard it was to rotate the shafts in the pivot housings with all the old grease and corrosion. It was probably about 10 ftlbs of force to get it going. That motor must be very strong.

I don't think the motor is all that torquey; it's just a little man woking thru a big lever.

OK I got the lowdown on the spring from classiczcars forum.
"Z Trivia - An almost long forgotten feature of the wipers is the "park" function. When you turn the wipers off, the motor spins one extra final rotation in reverse and that spring clutch engages (like a Chinese finger torture grabber) and "parks" the wiper blades in a lower position than they normally wipe in. However, at this time, everybody's springs look like your do and have the little tab has rusted and snapped off, and the park feature no longer works. At this point, I believe just about 100% of Z owners has had his wiper arms off for some reason over the years and they all have just repositioned their wiper arms so the at rest position is where they want it, and never even ever knew there ever was a park function."

Yup. I have to steer my arms to the proper space before cutting the switch at the proper moment to get them to park at the right place. So, do they offer replacement springs?

Not that I know of. It wouldn't be that hard to fabricate one.
