Oh, BTW, reading back at some to the pro's and con's, much of what you say is
true regards in town braking. However, only if you compare apples to apples.
Disc/pad size, compound, swept area and caliper type/ pressure all are variable.
I've driven many all disc cars, my 928, 7 serries (740i sport, 740IL's), current XJR
for instance, and all perform well in town traffic and at speed.
Back in the 80's I worked with DELCO and Bendix developing pad forming methods
and friction/ resin compound formulas. Early disc designs / compounds used asbestos
which had good cold friction, so could be used for parking brake. The early non-asbestos
compounds using glass fiber, metal fibers, barites etc had terrible cold friction, were noisy
and sucked for parking brake holding. Anyway, many technological changes have been
made over the years and personally I'm sold on discs. Another point, with bigger wheels
I'm able to use larger discs than fit the original 14" wheels. It's not a simple subject and
thanks for all the dialogue.
