My 1985 non-turbo 300zx with 34,000 original miles had its timing belt, tensioner, water pump, cam seals, and fan/accessory belts replaced by Nissan at 29,000 miles. HOWEVER..that was in 1994 which is 22 years ago and only 5,000 miles ago. Some people (some being mechanics) say that IF the accessory belts are not dry rotted and look good that MOST LIKELY the timing belt will also be good, and doesn't need to be changed. :? Is that being penny wise and pound foolish? How long can a belt last if it's not used and therefore isn't being worn down? :? I've been told that since this 3.0 liter is an "interference" engine, that if the belt breaks I can say "good bye" to this engine. Since I would never ever contemplate doing this job myself I asked my mechanic to look up the "computed job time" given for a timing belt change on this Z. He said 7 hrs. while some Z owners have told me 4-5 hrs.?? I'm from Long Island,NY (near Jones Beach) and would like to know if there are any exceptionally talented mechanics in my area who specialize in Z's. I'm more than willing to travel a longer distance to get the TB changed by someone who takes pride in their work and won't do any damage to any fenders or engine bay components in the process. I look forward to hearing from experienced people with knowledge on my dilemma. Should I or shouldn't I change the TB at this time? Thanks for your input.

Change it.

Recommended is every 60k miles or 10 years.

If you are a little mechanically inclined, it's not too hard of a job. I did mine over the course of a few weekends. There is a lot of literature available to read about how it is done.

Would recommend changing the water pump while you are in there.
