I know that it will cost power etc. but after 2 years of driving long distances in the summer heat I think it's time to investigate adding AC to the 280.
Has anyone already done it and does anyone have any recommendations as to how or perhaps where I may find out how possible it is to do.

Yes.

While my engine was out in 2008, Vinny and I explored adding AC to my 240. At that time MSA offered a complete new kit for less than $1000. There was some delay and when the unit became available again it had risen to more than $1500 (plus installation costs) and I couldn't afford it at that time.
Another of our members (Phrog) introduced us to Retro Air, another option.

I never got around to either and suffer mightily in the summertime.

Our discussion of this installation was lengthy and detailed, but one of the disadvantages of having more than 700 pages of comments is that I can no longer find that post and can't waste any more time searching for it right now.

Look up MSA air-conditioning and RetroAir classic car AC. Vinny is very experienced in installing the MSA unit (it works thru your dash vents, just like the original) but I don't know who has installed a RetroAir. It seems to have been a box in the passenger footwell which froZe passengers' ankles and other parts.

I assume he's talking to you, Karl.

Any AC system which fits one L-series engine will fit all the others. Even if his system is somehow "broken" or incomplete, it would cost LOTS less to be made functional than buying a new system. (I guess maybe you already figured that out).

I'll bet Vinny could install the system in your car as soon as he had 3-4 days to work on it.

Yes Frank thats what I figured on the system.
I also am figuring that a modern compressor and or condenser would make it more efficient.

He can buy a new R-134 rotary-vane compressor which is smaller and more efficient than the old R-12 piston compressor was. Lighter, too. Doesn't have to be a Datsun unit; can be any aftermarket brand as long as he can make it fit onto the the mounting bracket.

Hi Woody! Welcome.
Would love to Zee some pictures of your '71 if you get the time to post them here.

Is your Z a 4-spd or an automatic?

Frank , it is a 4 speed. I bought the car new in "71. I actually ordered a 70 right out of a magazine without ever seeing one in person! It took so long for the car to be delivered I bought a 71 instead. Will get the pictures and send them in awhile.

You must put up some pics .
Mine's a 71 CT car too but corrosion has gotten the better of parts of it.
I'm fighting the good fight though as everyone here knows.
