During the process of installing my new exhaust I couldn't just leave the left "frame rail" in it's current swiss cheese state.
I cut most of the bottom of the hole riddled rail out leaving the vertical walls.
Then I made some strips of 18 gauge steel.
I spent the afternoon welding it in while laying on my creeper getting coated with hot sparks.
I really should practice more as they aren't very good looking but it's the bottom of the car so who cares.
Anyway now it's solid but the "brim of the inverted hat" where the original is welded to the chassis is still questionable.
I filled in gaps with seam sealer and will put some paint on for protection when it cures.
What we go through for our Z's!

That sounds like a thorough job. Our member John from http://www.BadDogParts.com up in Massachusetts makes a framerail kit which boxes directly over rusted rails. It's about 3 times stronger than the original steel and can mount V8s without any bolstering. That framerail is important because unless you use the very center of the engine crossmember, that's the place everyone puts a floorjack to lift your Z.
I've known guys who jacked the floorjack straight up thru the frame rail ~ total rust.

So even if you botch the whole deal under there and don't like the outcome, Bad Dog can come to your rescue with a weld-on framerail kit. Some others fill that empty channel inside the frame rail with all sorts of metal strips and I think that's just added weight without any real strength. I feel the framerails are the way to go.

Frank

Yes I know all about John's and will do that eventually but this was a quick fix. Mine definitely have the scars of jacks past. I only use the crossmember and diff for jacking up the car.

I really like the many ways in which you are "bonding" with your Z. You have done a great deal of work on it yrslf, and that's only going to bring you two closer together. You will be best friends before long.

(Or worst enemies! )

Very Zen way of looking at it
I only do stuff myself. It's my therapy.
