After reassembling my rear suspension last year I had a new clunk upon accel/decel. I assumed it was the rear diff bearings giving up after so many years. Luckily I have a spare.
Well I had the car up today to tighten up a fuel leak at a union so I gave the rear area a once over. I was shocked to see that the two studs holding the diff to the moustache bar had worked themselves out. I took them out one at a time and used blue Loctite to hold them onto the diff cover. Tightened them down and took it out for a spin and...silence!
I still have the whine of the diff which is normal but no clunks at all.
Always double check your work!

Congrats! A rear clunk on the z31 is usually due to a shoddy differential mount.
