Post subject:  need half shaft... how to tell r-180 or r-200

Hi

I have the 1983 non turbo coupe 5 speed......love it..but I have the u joint clicking and play in the right rear wheel that it getting worse. It seems prudent to get the whole half shaft/new bootrebuilt etc...probably should do both sides. I just don't know enough. I don't even know how to tell if my car has the r 180 or r-200 diff. Any suggestions?

p.s. If I cannot do this myself this winter any ideas who does these repairs?
thanks

 Wow Barry, haven't heard your "voice" in many moons! Good to know you're still Zee-ing around.

RDZ [research & development for the Z] in New Milford is close to you and they specialiZe in the Z31 and Z32 cars. They've probably got any spares you might need, too. Give them a call. 203.628.772 five.

If RDZ is too busy to get you in, try Miller Nissan right there in Fairfield.

Both Miller and RDZ are our Club sponsors and often give price breaks to our members, so be sure to tell them you're one of us. 8)

The R200 is sizably larger than the R180, but of course you'd have to have them side by side to tell. The 180 rear case is flat and the 200 rear case curves. I can't get the photos to transfer here, so just look at this article stolen from zCar.com:

If you want to get a LSD for not too much money or retrofitting you can go the Subaru WRX route from a salvage yard. They use the same basic diff's.

An 83 non turbo with standard transmission will have the R-200. Automatics will have an R-180. You can easily see the aluminum side caps on the R-180 like shown in the picture. That's the easiest way to tell. Easy job, and I have some used shafts if needed.
