During the trip back from Miller Nissan Wednesday my signals stopped working. I attribute it to 45 year old flasher relays. I ordered new Tridon EL12 units for both.
I also took apart the signal switch contact box and they were a little toasted so I cleaned them with green Scotch Brite.
My question is simple but perplexing. Which rear of the three lights in the housing are supposed to come on during the signal and hazard and brake operation? Mine have all three lit for signal/hazard and braking. I saw a YouTube video with the signals only lighting the side two.
The first picture is brakes, second signal, third hazard.

I actaully double checked my 71 Z lights just now before replying.

Tail lights (for night driving) - top two bulbs, low level
Turn signal - Outside top and bottom bulb, high level
Hazard - Same as turn signal

I hope that helps!

I posted in classiczcars forum and Jim Arnett, a CTZCC member from Texas with a close VIN said all three bulbs are supposed to light when signaling, braking, and using hazard flasher. The top two come on for regular lighting.
So mine are correct.
Since cleaning the contacts the blinkers work much stronger and faster.
I highly recommend a cleaning for anyone.
Also the spring loaded mechanism to shut them off with wheel rotation was all gummed up and not moving well.
I used WD40 then some 3in1 oil and man they work great now.
They snap right back.

Yes josh that does help. I got info from another member hat says the two upper and lower should come on. What VIN is yours? I wonder if they changed the sequence. The one I saw on youtube had the same setup as yours.

"I wonder if they changed the sequence?"

 Oh, yeah, they did.
The very early cars seem to have made noticeable electrical changes every few production months. I suspect Carl Beck might have a list of upgrades-by-year. I know I have electrical spare parts from several early year cars, and they are incompatible with each other. Oh, they FIT where they're supposed to go, but they simply don't hook up to the plugs if they were made even a few months apart.
