Hoping Saturday will be the day when things go in. Head gasket set comes with valve seals so ill do those before putting it on the car. Did some cleaning since the head has been sitting for ~20 years

Latest video So ive done my favorite activity (valve lash!) three times in the past week. Did it the first time last Saturday, and after hard starting and sounding like a motorcycle I pulled the cover off to find that the rocker guide on cylinder 4 had turned sideways. Fixed that, packed my bags and drove to school. Car was fine until today it started sounding like a motorcycle again on startup. This time the rocker guide popped off so I redid my valves as intended by Racer Brown and it sounded perfect for about 5 seconds before it I heard a clicking from the engine and this is what I found. Album Link I can hear a twinkling on the valve when I stick a hose into the intake hole so its sounding like the valve seat dropped and isnt letting the valve close. What should I be inspecting/changing when buying a used a head or a head that has been sitting for a while? |

I know if they don't get the holes taped up, critters can nest in them. And it's the right time to power flush a head before you put it on. I have two heads sitting idle; an E31(used) and a P90 (rebuilt). Both are cammed but I suspect you would want to use your Racer Brown unit. |

The racer brown cam definitely has the old school cool factor but at this point I'm not oposed to having it sit until I have the time and funds to get that had back in action. Right now I'm at school and would just like to get a head put on hopefully this weekend to get back on the road. |

Looks like a bent valve. Also, I actually had a wood screw make it into the intake on one of my rebuilds. Was sucked 1/2 way past the intake valve where its head stopped it from dropping into the cylinder. Held the valve open like your video. Had to pull the head and install a new valve, the seat needed some lapping. |

Lube that cam up well before you run it. Try to force some oil or light assembly lube up into each bearing before turning it over. We're all dying out here, waiting to see what you find in #4 cylinder of your E31 head. |

 Rented a spring compressor form autozone but it had trouble compressing both of the springs. Took forever to get the springs off and when I did I discovered that the seals looked brand new. Going to just throw the head on and if the seals are too old then Ill replace them on the car with a better compressor. Gaskets and timing chain wedge should be here today, lubing the cam and valve lash, tonight, and it should go on the car tomorrow! |

Ask and you shall receive!    Looks like the sound I was hearing when sticking a hose down the intake really was the seat. First time pulling the head!

Wow, how about that! Doesn't look as if it fell far enough to damage your piston, but it might have bent your valve stem. Drop the valve and check the stem for damage. You might get away with using this head again after just a little cleanup and replacement valve seats. Nice! |

Head is on the car, and everything else is installed. Hasnt been run yet

Remember to watch carefully when you reinstall your distributor. One end of the drive key is fatter than the other. Remember the trouble you had with it 3 years ago. |

You wouldnt believe why it wasnt starting  . Distributor is pointing the wrong way at TDC so I need to pull the sprocket and rotate the crank
