   Haha!

You have no idea how many Z-nuts I know who have done that wrong (you, twice!) :P

It's not supposed to be that hard. You just have to put #1 piston (at the front of the engine) at the top of the POWER stroke (both valves closed, when the spark is expected), then insert the dizzy so the tapered slot spirals down precisely over the tapered peg when you push it in. Then pop the distributor cap back on ensuring the rotor is pointing to #1 cylinder pin. Ensure the wires are in the correct firing order leading to the correct spark plugs (153624) in counterclockwise rotation. Put a timing light on it to ensure you are about 12* BTDC and viola! Bob's your uncle.

My distributor will only go in one way but I did make one full rotation on the crank trying to figure out how to set the cam for the #2 sprocket. It was early and I remember thinking that one crank rotation= two rotations of the cam so I thought it would be fine

 Oh, a simple math problem!

Don't feel bad ~ math defeats us all, sometimes

1 crank rotation = 1/2 cam rotation, regardless how much sleep you've had. 8)

What I admire most about you, Larry (aside from being the fastest GoKart driver in Club history), is all the great stuff you're learning about your Z while you're young. You're bonding with your car and not afraid to try anything with it. Personally, I can't learn to do anything right by doing anything right. I only learn from my mistakes; I have to do stuff WRONG first, before I become smart enough to do it right the next time. That was the primary reason I never became a brain surgeon or a nuclear weapons expert.

Thank you for the kind words Frank but it looks like were a lot more alike thank you may have first thought  The car starts right up and sometimes idles but something isnt sounding right and definitely not driving right. Im going to check the usual suspects when I have time but for now heres the video https://goo.gl/photos/5C3qargc9but51XA6

I told you it wouldn't idle smoothly with that cam.
Could that be it?

I know you inspected #4 piston for any collision with the valve.

Looks like the issue was that the cam was 1 notch off even though I double checked everything  Tomorrow Ill finally have some time to make sure everythings put back together properly, tune the carbs and do valve lash. There must have been some miscommunication somewhere since the head I took off the car was a 72 E88 so the biggest difference should be the cam. Looking forward to seeing how the new setup feels!

I'm sorry Larry ~ from our PM discussions for some reason I thought you said you were replacing an E31, and that's why you were considering mine? I deleted my post pertaining to the E31 head.

If you've replaced an early (small valve 240) E88 with a later (big valve 260) E88, you should indeed expect a bit better performance once you get the timing correct. Good luck.

There is a special process to installing a cam on a L6 head, it's all in the "How to Modify" book and my local machinist will agree. If not done right it could snap. Don't spin the block, put it so it's not at TDC, so all pistons are down a little, then turn the cam. You can hit valves the other way. Plus you can feel you the cam spins. Keep in mind, how will it spin when it gets HOT. If you ever need a block or Head, just give me a Holler. I have plenty. Good luck, hopefully you wont have a problem.

With all the timing correct, the car had a very hard time turning over, was pinging and couldnt start easily after turning it off. Retarded the cam one tooth and the starting and running was a lot better better but in exchange the valves were incredibly loud even though I had set them hot and cold. The next time I took off the valve cover I put in my old cam and lash pads and what do you know, it runs like a dream

:D Gee Larry, you're a LOT smarter than you look!

Glad to hear this whole thing is now "finished" (Z cars are never finished). Now you can wipe the greasy fingerprints off the fenders and drive it to the monthly meeting at Miller tmrw! Good work!
Frank

You got that right. I left my key in the "On" position while switching cams and burned up my ballast resistor. I just stuck a spare blade connection in between the two connections and drove home. As I got off the highway my float got stuck so I fixed it and didnt drive for the next two days. As I was trying to back to drive back to school the car was losing power so I messed with the float for an hour before playing with timing, and then swapping over to my spare XR700 ignition box. Eventually I remembered that I had no ballast resistor and after checking, neither my coil or ignition box are meant to run without a ballast resistor so I ruined my igition and my backup ignition box. I have a pertronix coil and ignition coming in the next few days so I should be on the road eventually

Larry it seems like after every step forward, there's two in reverse.
Keep up the fight.
I just put my Pertronix in and it's awesome.
