Need to replace clutch in my z. Having a hard time finding a new/ used OEM fly wheel for it. Can I just do a clutch kit or do I need to do the fly wheel at the same time. Everything is stock original, have been babying it for years finally gave out.
OR is anyone interested to make an offer on her 77 280 S30 4speed 305 blue
body is solid frame rails slightly rusted but ok new struts all 4 corners new starter new master cylinder new bushings all rubber under hood replaced. make me an offer add 1000.00 if I do the clutch! :D

I have an extra flywheel if you need it.
Really though all you need to do is have yours resurfaced.
Fitzgerald Automotive has a great machine shop in Beacon Falls, CT

It cost me like $45 and came out perfect.
Any used one has to be resurfaced anyway.
Don't sell it!

Well, I've been scraping these, because I figured who needs one.......Just go get it machined. I can do these on a brake lath and have perfect results. Just saying.

Paul you should use the regular metal lathe at your school and do a lightweight version.
I saw someone on ebay selling them and it looks like all they did was turn down the thickness of the metal by a little and shaved about 5 pounds off.

Yea, I thought about that, but not at the school anymore, so need to find a used brake lathe. I should from now on save these fly wheels, maybe the metal was better back then then it is now. For instance, my 240 rotors I turned down still look good, no rust, but the rear disc I bought from MSA have surface rust from sitting over the winter. ummmmm

For sure the old metal is better.
A brake lathe may not have the capability to do the job but you can find them cheap.

The first time I turned one on a brake lathe I was skeptical first, but after driving the car I was convinced. Same concept as a brake rotor, but just leave one cutter back and cut one side instead of two. It's one of those things I'll eventually get...when I have space.

Only slightly off topic but for what itz worth,the last time I changed the clutch in my L28 equipped '71, I also upgraded to the bigger '83 flywheel/clutch w/ a Centerforce pressure plate. With new Vinnie Bedini installed stub axle bearings, I'm grinning (like a fool) thru the gears every time.

It's actually the Turbo and 2+2 flywheel. Same size, but bigger surface area for the clutch. I have that in my Z, original equipment......Al is one step ahead with a Center force clutch. No it all makes sense why you keep loosing me. :shock:
