I've got a diff leak coming from the rear cover and one of the bearing retainers that I want to address this weekend. Is it leaking because I've got a bad seal or is there a gasket or something for the retainers(held on by the 5(?) bolts on each side of my R180)? Need to know so i can order the right stuff when the cars up this weekend! Thanks

It's caused by gravity. 8)

It causes diff oil leaks!? :?: Hopefully the issue can be solved with RTV lol

["It causes diff oil leaks!?"]

Of course. Gravity causes ALL oil leaks on our Zs.
Without gravity, oil would be completely happy to stay right inside our car, where it belongs.
But once it hears the irresistible Siren Song of gravity, it relentlessly seeks a way out. 8)

Gravity coaxed quite a bit of oil out when I pulled the bearing retainer . Still no idea why its leaking and its definitely not leaking as much as I thought since there was plenty of oil left in the diff but I tried adding a little rtv to the corner its leaking from and well see how that goes

There is an O-ring seal inside the aluminum piece, and then the axle seal. If you had an R-200 you only have an axle seal. For the cover, clean very well, glue on gasket with 3M black weather adhesive, and let dry. (for the next time, easier to scrape gasket off cover, than under the car, that's the reasoning) Then very thin layer of silicon on other side, install on very clean diffy. Will not leak after that. Just do the side seals, most of the time not the O-rings, and there is a possibility you can crack the aluminum cover trying to take it off. Don't go there. Next is pinion seal.

I ended up pulling it all off. O ring was fine but the mating surface between the diff housing and aluminum cover wasnt. Filed the imperfection down and used some RTV to make sure it didnt leak from there anytime soon and its holding up well
