Guys I'm in the process of getting rid of the air pump system and have the fittings out of the balance tube and need to plug them. I seem to remember reading somewhere they aren't NPT(National Pipe Thread) but are BSPT (British Standard Pipe Thread) threads. They will fit each other but won't seal correctly and are therefore not interchangeable. I suppose I could use some JB Weld or other epoxy to seal them but I'd rather do it right. Another option would be to find the right size rubber vacuum plugs and put them over the fittings. |

Nope not the ID of the tube itself, just are the fittings BSPT and second how to plug them. |

I thought I just asked for metric pipe plugs at NAPA. Would that be British? |

Maybe is the answer. Metric is also known a DIN or ISO. Most people (other than engineer types like me and Frank) have never heard of British threads. Here's an explaination of metric and British threads. mdmetric.com/tech/tict.htm ralstoninst.com/news/story/the-difference-between-npt-bspp-and-bspt-seals Most likely they did give you metric but unless you have measurement equipment they all look the same and I'm sure the NAPA counter guy doesn't know the difference. If you don't have vacuum leaks then you got the right plugs. |

Just to see what they do, I called Z Therapy carbs and Bruce said they retap the holes to NPT to make it easy. |

I've been searching for some previous conversations we've had about that. Bryan Little held an interesting discourse on the various thread sizes found on the Z engine some many months ago, but I can't find it. I thought maybe it was in his excellent DATSUNZGARAGE, but I couldn't find it. Altho I know the difference btwn British and US threads, I don't know the direct answer to your question. Sorry.

I decided to just plug the fittings with rubber vacuum caps. If I feel like doing more work I may tap the ID of the larger fitting and put in a stainless M10x1.25 screw with Loctite. |

I used stainless allen head plugs when closed off my balance tube. BSP and NPT threads are very similar, you wouldn't want to mix them in a vital spot like the oil sensor.... but for a simple air plug you can use NPT and loctite them in. I think mine were 1/8...you may have to try a couple of sizes. Thanks for the info Bryan I may do the plug thing but I used the rubber caps and they seem to be ok. |
