From club member Phil Pepe:

"I need to change out the ignition lock cylinder in a 1982 280ZX asap - is this easy or no?
I need to do this where the car currently is located because it cannot be started."

-----------

Phil doesn't currently have internet access, so please PM me (Jim) if you would like to help him via email or telephone so I can give you his contact info.

i have no experience with the 280zx locks, but feel they are all basically the same.

My 240Z ignition comes in two parts, the ignition cylinder itself (which starts the car) and the steering wheel lock (which accepts the key). Those two units are held together by simple (altho tiny) screws. Unscrewing them allows you to pull them apart, giving access to the face of the ignition cylinder (which has the electrical plug attached to the bottom of it). Then the car can be started and run by simply turning the slot with a screwdriver. The steering wheel will remain locked, however.

Phil has two choices. He can either (a) replace the whole steering lock/ignition assembly (about $200 for parts) or (b) replace the key tumbler inside the steering lock mechanism (about $90 parts). I suspect option (b) probably requires removal of the steering lock anyway.

His biggest obstacle will be drilling out the (2) one-way screws which secure the steering wheel lock to the steering column. Any locksmith can do that, and Phil can then remove the entire lock and drive the car by separating the ignition switch and turning it with a screwdriver. The problem is, until his locksmith installed another lockset in the steering wheel lock and replaced the whole unit on the Z, anyone else could drive his car with a screwdriver.

Not sure how he has email without internet access?

You can pull the back off after removing the 2 screws and start it that way with just the switch part. To replace, just tap the security screws with a sharp chisel, once the break free they should spin out. That's really the hardest part, take other 2 screws out and remove.
