Ok, here's a good one for the Nissan/Borg Warner T5 owners:

I want to replace the rear tailshaft bushing in my 1983 280zx turbo T5 as the driveshaft yoke has a bit of free play...it's 28 years old after all. The Nissan microfiche doesn't list the bushing separately...you have to buy the entire tailshaft assembly ($$$)

Luckily the Ford tailshaft bushing that has been around for decades is said to be the correct one that 'everyone' uses, and is sold separately, part# B3TZ-7A034-B. So I went ahead and got a new bushing directly from the Ford dealer. But tonight after removing my driveshaft the bushing appears larger than the Nissan T5 yoke by about 2mm all the way around. Lying under my car and squinting with a caliper it looks like the Nissan bushing really is slightly smaller. More annoying is the recommended AZ2200 removal tool also won't fit into the end of the tailshaft, it's too big by about 1mm.

So my question is has anyone ever replaced the rear tailshaft bushing on their 280ZX T5. If so where did you get the bushing???

O geeezzz, yea the only thing that should fit between the yoke and bushing is fine molecules of gear oil...hense the oil slot in the bushing.

When I had my driveshaft fabricated the shop (Powertrain Industries) didn't bat an eyelash when I mentioned I needed a 280ZX T5 front yoke...but leave it to Nissan to do something unusual. Mine is 24 splines, I think the regular T5 yokes are 27.

I'm hoping that the 280ZX T5 made it into some other other brand cars so I can source a bushing from them. I'm calling Powertrain Ind. tomorrow to clear this weirdness up...

After two days of searching online I found a source for the tailshaft bushing(!), it's listed under Misc parts.

http://www.drivetrain.com/parts_catalog/manual_transmission_overhaul_kits/borg_warner_t5_overhaul_kit.html

It's $27.95 while the Ford bushing is about $15 so that's not too out of line. Now I have to find a smaller size puller tool to get the old one without having to remove the whole tailshaft assembly. 50% of the way to a solution...

What's holding the old bearing in place? Can you make a special tool yrslf? I mean, it should slide right out if you can grab it, yes?

I've seen people mention that it's really hard to get out without the right tool because it's pressed in. The tools are out there, but it'll be a one-time use...and then sell it on Ebay I think.

For the record:

According to Powertrain Industries there are two T5 yokes in play here. The model 1203 is 1.495" in diameter and is the one commonly used on Ford/Chevy. The 1203S is a smaller diameter 1.375" which is the one used on the Nissan T5.

So the Nissan T5 uses a smaller diameter front yoke than the ones used on V8s. So much for standardization.

So can they tell you what other cars used that model T5?

According to him they only showed the 1981-83 280ZX turbo as using the smaller yoke. He didn't mention the 84-86 300ZX which also could have the T5.

BTW, I think I can modify the AZ2200 removal tool I have by grinding it in certain places. This will reduce its outer diameter and let it fit into the smaller diameter tailshaft. We'll see.

I was right. The yoke used by Ford for the T5 tailshaft has a 1.5" or 38mm outer diameter. The T5 (FS5R90A) Nissan put in the 1982-86 280ZX/300ZX turbo came with a 1.3" or 35mm yoke. This explains why the Ford bushing is too big. The speedometer gear is very different than the GM or Ford gear as well. So it looks like the FS5R90A is pretty unique.

Nissan doesn't sell the tailshaft bushing separately, the one on Drivetrain.com is the correct one, how they sourced it is a real mystery.

BTW, I found the the AZ2200 removal tool can't be modified to fit in the Nissan tailshaft. I think Snap-on makes the proper smaller puller but its $190 so I'm going to have to find a transmission shop and see if they can press it in for me.

Another thing Gm/Ford does is have the slave cylinder in the bell housing. Dumb Idea. So is this in yet? Have you tried the chisel idea, sliced down, and collapsed, pull right out?

There's only about 4mm clearance between the shaft splines and the sides of the bushing. I worry I'll mess it up pulling it out and have to take out the tailshaft assembly which I REALLY don't want to do.

I got back my T5 driveshaft this morning with a new rear ujoint, its going in tonight. If that settlles down the vibration I may not need the front bushing after all..we'll see.

At the risk of becoming tiresome...here is the correct Nissan T5 tailshaft bushing on the 280ZX T5 yoke.

Not tiresome at all. Following these interesting projects step by step in photos teaches us all "how to" in case we ever encounter such problems ourselves.

What we write here today will last for many years. Somebody will surely face this same challenge again someday. Your experiences and experimentation will help them resolve their issues.
