Hey fellaz,

I'm exploring some options for my Z. It's a 1990TT.
I might be getting my valves replaced/heads redone.

Does anyone have a shop they'd recommend to me? Hopefully you'd trust this shop with your life, that way I know they'd be doing a great job. I'd also HOPE they have experience on these Z's.

If ya'll want to share some experiences too that would be great. I'm curious how much new valves, etc and machine work will cost.

They don't do the machining. They would end up sending the heads off to "their machine shop guy" and up-charge whatever they charge.

I called Central Auto in Stratford, as they were recommended. They seem to know their stuff, but I don't have anywhere else to compare the price to.

I had a sailboat engine rebuilt by Pete 17 years ago that is still running strong. Crank was polished, shot peened, and magnafluxed,water jackets were coated, rods polished, shot peened, and magnafluxed,new pistons, valves, guides, all surfaces machined, and everything balanced.

I'm just looking to get the heads machined and replace the valves, nothing too crazy.

What sort of work are you having done?

My rules for a head shop:

- heads are machined onsite
- has heads and blocks scattered around, appearance of lots of work moving in and out.
- avoid places that specialize in truck heads, cast iron, etc. as well as high dollar race shops.

I have been in a head shop in Torrington and one in Wallingford that almost fit the bill. But none that jazzed me. Areas with Nascar and dirt track always have a few nearby.

Basic head work is not high-tech, but an option is to pay and simply ship out of state. Ballos Machine in Richmond, VA did both my P90s if you want to go south of the Mason-Dixon.

Center auto in Stratford has a complete auto machine shop and does lots of high performance engine work. They also do flywheel refinishing and other stuff.

Yes I know of them, I received a quote from them and they resurfaced my flywheel last month for me.

They are who I was recommended to, but a non-z'er so I was seeing if there were any Z folks who had experience at certain shops.
