took off the carbs to adjust butterfiles as they didn't close completely. found that they were fine but the idle speed stopper was too high even with the adjustment screw off, so I had to file the stopper a little to avoid this problem. Now as the carbs are off, I'll check the intake manifold for straightness and will also put on some heat shield wrap or fabricate a proper shield from stainless steel sheet.

next time i'll make sure all these are done before I install the carbs, it is frustrating to take them off for something that could have been done in the first place..

Ahhh, frustrating yes, but you're learning, and you're bonding with your Z! We've all been there, done that.

and when a problem is solved and you know it is solved, that feels good. Now the butterflies close snugly with a nice, crisp, snapping sound and I know they won't be a problem anymore. There's nothing that should be causing high idle as long as I can make sure there are no vacuum leaks in the system. And then I really look forward to starting the engine again because everything should be ready for tuning - at last. :)

I've heard you can expect an idle speed of about 800-1000 rpm with new Webers. I've always felt it had more to do with the cam than with the carbs. Carbs should be able to be set for any idle. The main difference btwn Webers and other indiction systems is that Webers give each cylinder its own throat and venturi. Other systems usually make at least three cylinders share a carburetor.

I've heard also 900-1100 rpm for triples but mine was well above 2000 :)
