Post subject:  Tachometer issue

1979 280Zx , 199,000 miles strong. Tach has started to run erratically. Registers properly then fluctuates to "0" then bounces up and down while engine is running steady. Seems to be affested by bumpy roads so I'm thinking something has come loose. I believe the signal comes from the blue wire off the coil, but I don't know what else it runs through before it gets to the tach itself. Any comments about what to look for?

Hi Bob ~

I was unable to capture the actual schematic for your car, but if you'll scroll down to the 1979 280zx engine wiring, you'll get a good diagram of where all the spaghetti leads.

My wiring experience is limited to the early 240Z, so I was kinda surprised to zee your tachometer runs to the fuel pump relay system, for some reason. :?:

Hope this helps. There certainly are enough 280zx owners in here to tell you more....
The intermittent operation sounds like a short, or maybe a flexing wire which is breaking the connection when you hit a bump.
SO much fun to trace those.

Frank, Thanks for the schematics. At least they unravel some of the wiring so I know what to wiggle to see what is loose.
