Post subject:  240z, not starting

I've recently put a lot of effort to make my Z ready for the big show on wednesday, i tought it was all good to go, but no.

Engine cranks happily, delivers fuel and spark, but does not start. All it does is make few loud coughs and pops (maybe detonate?), and occasionally puffs out cloud of smoke from carbs (SU). I have tried with needles on lean and on rich, but it seems to have no effect.

Cam timing is correct, and i have not altered dizzy in any way. I have no-points dizzy, with diy ignition module, i called to the engineer who did it and he said that there should not be any malfunction in dizzy/module, as it is made from very durable and simple materials.

I really need your input on this.

Spray some brake clean or carb clean in the intake, if it starts right up for a few seconds, you then know it is fuel related.

I think he has fuel, or it wouldn't cough and flash back thru the carbs. But Paul's check doesn't hurt anything and will eliminate one element of the 'start' equation.

I suspect the timing is off.

Rev, check your ignition timing and the plug wire sequence. Remember your firing oder this way:

15 is too young for a girl to have her first baby; she's still a kid herself.
36 is too old for a girl to have her first baby; she'll be an old woman before the kid is grown;
24 is the perfect age for a girl to have her first baby.

(or you can consider the same ages for military service).

So your firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4. The dizzy turns counterclockwise and the #1 pin on the distributor will be the one closest to the radiator.

Double-check that your wires all lead to the correct plugs and that you numbered them correctly from the #1 pin on the dizzy, then get back to us, pleaZe?

Indeed, timing was off. When in TDC, dizzy rotator should point at cylinder no1, instead it pointed to 4. Not a biggie :lol:

Sooo, how did the Big Show go on Wednesday?

Did your Z generate any interest?

Or was it snowed-out? :lol:
