Merry Christmas everyone!

I was talking to my Dad and he is having a problem with his Z back home.

The fuel pump doesn't seem to get power. When the battery is connected to the fuel pump itself, the pump turns on fine. Then if the car is started it runs just fine. So the pump is good and the filters aren't clogged. We think it's some electrical gremlin but I just wanted to see if anyone had some pointers on where to look first.

Thanks everyone!

Yessir, almost certainly an electrical glitch.

When you turn the key to the 'start' position, the pump doesn't receive electrical power, but then when you release the key onto the (parallel) 'run" position, it does? Certainly nothing wrong with the pump itself ~ sounds like something's maybe burned out in the starting circuit.

You must remind us what year your Dad's Z is, please?

Maybe someone has an electrical diagram for that year Z car, and can steer you to the resistors, fuses and fuseable links involved in the starter circuit?

Shouldn't be anything too serious, too difficult, or too expensive to fix.
Glad your dad is still running his Z this late in the year!

Well, I saw that, but thought perhaps "his Z back home" might be a different car....

Wow thanks for the speedy replies guys.

Yup, it is my Dad's 1975 280Z. I am visiting in good 'ole California so the weather is fine for driving minus a few rain drops. Driving season is all seasons!!

I haven't seen the problem myself yet, but I will check back with what exactly the pump does (or doesn't do) when the key is at those positions.

Specifically, Fresno.

Nice man, we're a few hours away from getting some snow here; the roads are already salted... Get in that Z and drive for us!

Good luck.

Isn't this the year they had a fuel switch in the Air Flow Meter? If you pop the lid and push the metal tab to the contact you should hear the pump run. With key on I would suspect.

Update:

My brother in law looked at the main EFI relay (the one under the dash near the steering column). He said he unplugged connections and cleaned them with cleaner and plugged them back in. The Z fired right up afterward.

One weird thing is that the pump doesn't sound like it primes when the key is turned to the "on" position. Is that normal?

Paul, I think it is the year with that switch. The wiring diagrams from the FSM show the fuel pump connecting to something in the AFM.

The next thing I was gona tell you, is clean connections on the EFI. When it comes to fuel pump priming, some cars will prime as soon as key is in the on position, some will prime if you just click it to the start position, then you should hear it. (all cars in general, except hybrids and electric cars, )

Ah gotcha. Seems like the problem is solved as she starts up reliably now. Thanks everyone!
