I had problems with the electronic fuel pump on a 1980 280ZX. Pump was working, but would make strange noise when the ignition was first turned on. Problem went away when I replaced the ignition switch. On the ZX you can either replace the entire unit or just the electical switching device on the back of the ignition steering wheel lock assembly. This may well be your problem. Additionally, I replaced all of the relays that have any part of the fuel pump circuit. On the ZX there are three.
