I want to start by saying Thank you Ross Saturday was great. Driving saturday with the 71 240Z I had problems with the car didnt pass 60 MPH. when i got home that evening I found that the filter was clogged. I replaced the filter and the car drove great for an hours . But the problem came back. The question i have is there a second filter and i noticed that sometime the filter is less than 1/4 full other times 1/2 full . Maybe my fuel pump is starting to go bad?

The most likely cause is forty years' worth of crud sloshing around in the bottom of your fuel tank, clogging right at the pickup. Sooner or later everybody has to go through the grief of dropping their fuel tank and cleaning it out and usually re-coating the interior. You may have another filter by the tank; lots of times previous car owners put them in. The mechanical fuel pump in your car is stupid simple; take it off and take it apart and check the rubber diaphragm if you want, but they are extremely reliable and usually when they go bad it's not a slow lingering death; they work or they don't. The way to fix the problem with air in the filter is to install a filter that you can't see inside.

thank you for the information. New filter is still clear. Maybe my carbs are going bad. Whats funny she drives good one mintue and then she starts up. I'm going to jack up the car to see if it has another filter by the gas tank. should it look like the one under hood?

There were different types used back there, but it will be on the passenger side, just ahead of the rear half shaft. Some folks actually put a second fuel pump back there, in line with another filter.
