i happen to know that on my 85 z there were three different ways that the fuel level was monitored the first being the fuel gauge the second being the smaller gauge under the fuel gauge and the third and my favorite was the voice saying "Fuel level is low". none of these are working on my 88 can anyone tell me where i should start looking as far as a solution? I just thought about getting an after market fuel gauge installed, anyone have this problem? :?

I'll bet "Betty" only talks when the gauge tells her to. If the sender is not telling the gauge the fuel is low, the gauge never wakes Betty up.

Does Betty scold you when your doors are open? Do you EVER hear her voice?

It's a faulty sending unit in the tank. I had the same issue with my '87. The original unit was a sliding float on a bar rheostat that corrodes over time. Nissan actually redesigned the part to a bar float. Get the new unit from your Nissan dealer, its still available.

It installs from inside the car, on top of the tank through the hatch area floor. Be sure to use a new O ring as well.

I've been out cleaning and organizing Z parts and if I see a sending unit, (think I have,) I'll let you know.

On my Z, the larger gauge works but the smaller gauge does not... It almost looks like the needle for the smaller gauge has disappeared?
