Hi,

I found an un-used exhaust system for cheap. They were originally bought from MSA.

I was wondering if anybody knew if the headers were the same for 84-85 Z31 and the 86 Z31.

I believe the catback is the same for all 2-seater models between 84-89 (with turbo being 2.5" diam and NA being 2.25" diam).

Any help would be greatly appreciated! If the 84-85 headers bolt right on then I would love to get this set.

Almost everything from MSA is good quality. If you can grab unused headers for a good price, you can probably sell them for more, or use them yrslf. I run MSA header and Twice Pipes on my own Z. I've had them ceramic coated from block to bumper and consider them one of the best improvements I ever made to my car. No regrets.

The exhaust system isn't the MSA 3", but it is this one:

The odd thing is that there is a "86-89" version of these headers:

I emailed MSA and Garrett replied that these 84-85 ones won't work on my 86.... :? ?

They will work fine. The only difference is the size of the oxygen sensor bung. 84/5 use a 22mm diameter sensor while the 86+ use a 17mm sensor. Otherwise identical and bolt-on ready.

Solution: plug hole and have bung welded right next to it

cost: $20 +/- from either local exhaust shop or CTZCC member with a welder

If this is too daunting a task then by all means buy them and I will gladly purchase them and a few extra for your trouble.

Awesome! Thanks for the info! I knew there had to be someone here that would know :P. Still astonished by how much knowledge there is here.

I think I'll go for it! Hopefully the guy still has it available by time I'm done changing the timing belt and have time to pick up the part.

The person I am buying from sent me photos of all the pieces.

Is there anything missing here?

It looks like it matches the product photos on MSA's site. What is that black pipe in the front in the photos of the headers? It doesn't seem like it's part of the set (or at least I can't imagine where it goes).

Hey man, if you do it, keep us posted. I'd be really interested to see how it works out for you!

Decided it was more cost effective and time saving to ship the thing....

.... woke up to two nice boxes of goodies.

The only thing is that there are no instructions. Anybody install one of these kits before? I roughly know what to do but the exact details I will have to figure out (unless anyone has pointers).

That looks weird. I can sort of put it together in my mind's eye, but it looks like it has an extra piece for a single exhaust system.....

Oh, wait ~ I zee it now. I think that black bifurcated pipe on the right is your tailpipe, and you're missing one of the chrome exhaust tips. That's the only way it all makes sense to me.

Numbering your pipes from left to right, 1-2-3-4-5-6-7, I think they go together this way:

(forget about that short chrome pipe beside #3; that's an exhaust tip. I didn't even give that a number)

a. The black headers (#4 & #5) go to the engine, of course;
b. #3 and #6 bolt up to the headers;
c. #2 attaches to #3;
d. #1 attaches to #2;
e. the muffler attaches to #1 (see the hanger welded to the pipe?);
f. the black #7 pipe attaches to the muffler, but I don't know why it has a flange on it;
g. TWO chrome exhaust tips fit on the twin ends of #7.

Does that make sense?

Just a guess. There are no moving parts on a 240Z, so I'm actually unqualified to vote on this application. :lol:

Ah actually #7 is an extra piece that doesn't belong to this exhaust. The seller didn't know (he photographed everything here and said it's the kit)... sorry for not explaining!

I actually have no idea what #7 goes to. I had thought it went to another Z but by browsing through the MSA website I didn't find any piece that looked vaguely similar. I guess for now it can be my home security device.

The way it fits is #1 goes to the muffler, #2 goes onto #1. #2 flange end goes to the catalytic converter. Then the front half is just as you described.

The Haynes manual states that an exhaust sealant should be used between #1 and #2 joint. Is there a specific kind that I should use or is the Permatex exhaust good enough?

I understand how the flanges connect, but I am a little bit confused on how the slip on parts (#2 to #1, #1 to muffler, and #6 to #3) seal together. My guess is that I slip these parts on and then use the tightening ring things to close the gap. Is this correct?

And how does the exhaust tip (between #3 and #4) attach to the muffler? Do you typically take that to a welding shop?

Last note: I plan to sand and paint everything in high temperature black paint (except the muffler and the tip). I am gonna do the budget thing and just use several coats of good high temperature spray paint.

Justin, are you familiar with the New Jersey Z car club? They have a very active facebook page. There's actually a thread going on right now about an exhaust, but its on a z32. Regardless, they seem a lot more z31 and 32 aimed than us over here. Maybe give it a shot?

Here's the link:

Good Luck!

That last pipe is not part of the system. By the looks of it it appears it may be a collector pipe for an L-series aftermarket header? Maybe?
