So there are dished-topped pistons and there are ______ pistons. (What's the other "option"?)

Flat-top or domed. The flat tops come right up to the top of the cylinder, and the domed actually protrude a tad above the engine block, and into the combustion chamber itself. That of course reduces the amount of space all that fuel/air mixture gets squeeZed into, which raises the CR a point or two.
i think the conversion sounds like a bit much for me tackle right now. like i said before not looking for a nightmare project.
Actually, Nemesis, it shouldn't be all that bad. And from what the Turbo guyz say, the result is well worth the effort. I know I've tried to keep up with Phil's Turbo car in my 240Z. I led him until we hit about 6 mph, then he just sort of disappeared over the horizon....

Frank,
I think he was referring to his 88 Z31 for the turbo conversion. While it can has been done many times, I believe it is a bit more involved than an L-series conversion.
Rewarding and fast= yes
simple and easy to do= no :?

I have done several of these conversion and the nuts and bolts are all pretty self explanatory but lots are specific to the turbo car. There are tricks to make life easier but ultimately there is no way around some of the grunt labor involved nor the tedium of the wiring modifications. The issue that arises is that there are differences among various years of Z31 which require different wiring modifications. The other variable is the combination of parts being used: top or side feed injectors, year of ECU, Turbo being used, etc.

Take your time, ask questions, use the right tools, have fun, keep some cash laying around for incidentals. Now get to work.... 8)
