Looks like I'm in the market for a turbo rebuild. I've heard increased howling under boost over the past two years which has caused me to baby my baby  . Now I can see that she needs a rebuild, the compressor blades are making contact with the housing. Time for that T3/T04e upgrade!!

Already intercooled Mark! Running 12 psi on the stock turbo with 96k miles for several years finally did it in.

I have a T3/T4 that needs rebuilding......I think it's a genuine Garrett, too...you interested?

Thanks Mark, I already had a vendor lined up to purchase a rebuilt t3/t04e. Besides, I don't feel qualified to rebuild a turbo, I'm pushing my mechanical skill set to just remove the stock one!

It's so ridiculously easy, a monkey could do it. I would know, because I am one (at least sometimes). The only thing you really need special equipment for is balancing/checking the turbine shaft for bends. On the cheap side, or if you have a known-good shaft/compressor, you could just reassemble them the way they came. Most turbines/shafts and compressors are pre-balanced anyways. YMMV, but the turbo I rebuild with Garrett bearings/seals ran perfectly, and had no signs of adverse wear when I removed it several thousand miles later.

Monkeys make excellent mechanics because they can use their tails to hold a flashlight while they work with their hands. But you have to be careful about letting them accessorize; they really fall for bright flashy stuff and they will put spinner hubcaps on anything they can.

Yup, rebuilding is easy. Getting the unit on and off is much more difficult than the actual rebuild.

Phil, you may miss the low end of the stock T3 turbo. It will be perceived as a loss of low end power. However, the faster you get going, the harder you will be pressed into the seat, with the T3/T4.

With all of the metal bits, is that one a candidate for a rebuild or is the damage fatal?

Sorry about your misfortune Phil! Hope it turns out great though!

The turbo shop I'm working with actually has changed their recommendation to a t3/t04b 60 trim turbo. The compressor side is a bit smaller and they say it will spool up faster then the 04e. The inlet on the 04e is 4" compared to the stock t3 2 1/4" and the t04b 3".

I should be wrapping up my 300zx ecu/maf upgrade this weekend. I've decided to put off dealing with the turbo removal until after the EMS swap is proven out. I can just see me breaking a stud off, the last one of course!

I am running that turbo Phil. T3/TO4B but mine is a "super-v", similar trim to the 60. It does spool up fast, but is not as efficient in the low boost, like the OEM one was...just wait until you feel 10-20 psi range on it though! Hang on.

At 100mph it pushes you in the seat harder than at 60mph. It's an unnatural feeling.
