Reconnecting the hose on the valve cover should have made a HUGE improvement in idle quality and should have resulted in a very large rise in idle speed. If it did not, you still have a vacuum leak or AFM issue.

A quick test is to loosen the oil cap, and lift it slightly while the engine is idling. The engine should practically stall out. If not, again, vacuum leak, or an improperly set air flow meter.

Finding the leak can be done by ear, with a length of hose pressed to your ear, fish around the intake area and listen. The "spaghetti" vacuum control lines for the HVAC are notorious leakers. The brake booster is another check mark. Starter fluid is one good method, as Frank mentioned.
