The title says it all.... I noticed for the first time today that my car will run without the key being in the ignition. I noticed this when I was trying to shut the car off and the key came right out.

I'm assuming that both the key and the ignition slot are just worn out.

Is this a common occurrence?

It's the ignition switch. Yes, very common on older S30s.

No need to replace the entire assembly, just the switch itself. Got 'em cheap at www.rockauto.com

There's another possibility.

If you have upgraded your electrical charging system to a higher-amperage alternator, and eliminated the voltage regulator with a diode (internally-regulated alternator), this will happen if the diode burns out. You won't be able to shut the car off except by stalling it in 4th gear with the brakes locked.

Is your ammeter showing anything strange, Marc?

Frank

Thanks John and Frank!

Frank the car does turn off when I put the key back in. The ignition was a little stuck but eventually I was able to turn the key to left to shut It off.

Dave makes a ready to install push button start system. It's well thought out and a plug-in system. I think MSA carries it, or you can find him over at classiczcars.com

Here it is. http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/PEIC11/12-4250

You may be able to save a few bucks by buying them directly from Dave.

Okay, who's Dave? And who's Dave? The Daves are proliferating
like the Johns, Eds, and Als used to. Why don't people name their
kid something distinctive, like Ezekiel or Nathaniel or Zechariah, so
we can distinguish who is whom?

Reminds me of when we were kids about 8 or 10, playing LITERAL
sandlot baseball. Yup, in an abandoned SANDPIT. So, one day Charlie
shows up and excitedly tells us that his parents had a baby. His baby
sister. So Rick (me) says, "Wow, neat, what did they name her?" And
Charlie replies, "AMBER." Rick, who never has been able to hear very
well and who, on top of that, with his brain wired differently from anyone
else, which causes him to hear things differently than anyone else, starts
laughing like a lunatic. Of course everybody else asks what's so funny.
And Rick, barely able to speak from laughing so hard, asks, "Who
on earth names their kid HAMBURG?"
