Its hot in Arizona.

When I open the fuel tank cap there is a MAJOR release or pressure.
Normal?

It can even register a few residul PSI on the fuel pressure gauge at the regulator.

Normal. Almost all of them do that.

In my UNVENTED 1970 240Z, it's actually a vacuum. If I wait too long to open the cap (drive the tank too low) it can actually make it difficult to open the cap.

I have developed the habit of opening and closing the cap periodically, regardless of the fuel level. Some models had vented gas caps ~ mine doesn't. Most have "kidney tanks" hidden under the panel behind the passenger seat. Mine doesn't.

Phil has an interesting story about this. 8)

My 1973 240 has "another tank" in the cabin behind the right rear shock.
Not sure what that is. Shaped like a kidney I suppose.

It also has a factory electric fuel pump.
At least I think it is factory?

I filled the car very full Monday and opened the cap today after driving all of 5 miles and it barfed up about a quart of fuel on my hand... I think I should punish it for this?

I have been leaving the cap partially loose ever since.

Tomorrow is supposed to be 116f+.
Stupid hot. How can anythying be expected to run properly?

My Nissan truck does ok. and my 1988 560SeC does surprisingly well with some mods.

Yeah, that's the one. That "other" tank behind the passenger seat shock tower is supposed to balance pressure and capture vapors. It has about 6 hoses running to it, from the tank top and the engine bay. It might be made of plastic or metal.

Unused fuel returns to the tank from the engine, causing vapors inside the cabin. (Not to be confused with exhaust fumes being sucked into the cabin past leaky hatch gaskets or tail lamps). That 'kidney tank' is supposed to prevent that, or reduce it. I have never been able to follow all the hoses attached to it, and they changed over the years. If you get one of them plugged up it can cause fuel tanks to collapse, or fuel to surge out of the filler, or caps to refuse to turn without a wrench.

Most cars get a WHOOSH of pressure released when the cap is open. I get a WHOOSH of vacuum equaliZing when I open mine.
