ok so lately ive been hearing what sounds like a ticking coming from the engine bay as well as my oil pressure gauge in the z doesn't go above 60psi at 3k rpm going 75 (only in the morning when i start the car up for about 3 min, it will go over then gradually come down). when i accelerate the tick seems to increase as well and i occasionally i will hear what sounds like the metal vibrating against another piece of metal but it lets up ive done some research and it seems it could be one of or a combination of lifter tick spun bearing VTC springs or the cam gear i hope some one can help me out she is my DD and i need her more now than ever!!

Almost sounds like valve tick due to cold oil, and it goes away when the oil heats up and "exands".....

....Not sure about the oil pressure part, possible effect of the oil needing to heat up?

What weight oil do you use? Could your valves need adjusting?

Yes, I agree with Red ~ the oil thing could be separate from the ticky thing.

Sometimes a blown exhaust gasket or head gasket or loose sparkplug will sound like a metalic "tick". Check your oil to see if you have anything granular in it. Hold the dipstick up in the sunlight and see if there are any 'sparkles' in it. Then wipe your fingers on the dipstick and see if you feel anything like sand in the oil.

When the engine is cold, remove your radiator cap and see if there is any oil mixed in it. Any black bubbles or milky-grey coloring would indicate a blown headgasket, which would allow oil to mix with the coolant.

If both of those are OK, you can probably forget the oil concern ~ it's another matter.

With the engine idling, listen carefully all around it ~ especially near the exhaust manifold and sparkplugs. *(PLEASE be careful not to get your necktie caught in the moving fanbelt, like my buddy John did when we were kids!)

Hold the handle of a long screwdriver against your ear. Place the tip (carefully) at each exhaust port and all along the cam covers. Try to locate the source of the "tick" you hear.

How does the engine run? Does it miss or skip? Does it have full power? Does your temperature gauge show normal readings?

Frank

If this can wait until after the hurricane, I'd be glad to meet you and look at it together. I have a doZen things to do before Irene hits us.

Alan,

perhaps we meet at the meeting at Miller Nissan in September. I can give you the wheel then.

Well Allan, if your engine is 'broken', it's *usually* cheaper to fix it than to replace it. The guyz at RDZ can re-hab your engine and make it better than it was when new.

I still volunteer to look at it for you after we dry out, if you'd like. It might be just a blown gasket. We can do a quick compression check to zee what each cylinder looks like.

Frank
