Finished my new F54 / N42 and rebuilt my 5 speed.
Got a new light flywheel and AzZcar clutch.
Put it all together and Wham.

Careless and not paying attention and the hoist slipped and motor dropped. Trans tailcone smacked the ground.

I have another older 5 speed.
Does anybody know if I can swap the tailcones?
Do I need to swap the shifter stuff since my new tranny was a "Tall ear" shifter?

Now that I removed the tailcone, I worry about the seal from the adapter plate to the bellhousing. Used Anaerobic sealant to reassemble.

I guess I should pull the bellhousing and re-seal it all.
Uuuug.

Never tried swapping just the rear housing. I'm sure someone here can chime in with a tip or two.

Worst case it's time to source another 5-speed.

Thanks.
I've got 2 5 speeds. I just wanted to use the newer "Close Ratio" box.
Only thing I can see different is the shifter arm.
The rest looks the same, but it can be hard to tell.

Always easier if somebody else has done it before and knows the drill.

Well, there's one way to find out; Do it! I don't think the actual changes in gearsets are a problem since they're both 5 speeds. Check all the interior dimensions and clearances to be sure. You could even apply a little machinist blue to areas you think might be a problem, and that will indicate if there is indeed interference. After you assemble the halves (without sealant) play with the gears and spin the shafts. I don't even think the shift linkage will be a problem, unless the internal connections are different.

I converted a 240sx 5 speed to my L28, just some slight machining on the inside of the L28 bellhousing to make it fit, so I can't imagine two of the older Z 5 speeds being too different. As far as I know, the only thing that really changed between the S30-S130 5 speeds were the shifter ears and the gear ratios.

But then again, I've never tried swapping the tail ends before.

I've been trying to call Vinny Bedini about this, but he's out of the shop. Left messages to call me and forwarded the link to this page. Will adviZe as soon as I hear anything. I have no 1st-hand experience swapping out tailshaft housings.

Paul? Are you out there?

Frank

Thanks guys.
I am trying to knock out the taper pins and switch the shift rods.
The 1983 model does use different geometry on the shifter lever.

But the rest looks the same. Will bolt it up and try.

The thing that is making me cry is that I probably need to pull the tranny apart again and reseal everything. Since the tailcone came off and the torque on the bellhousing went away the sealant probably toast between the two? :(

I would think so. Even without seeing it (remember, I'm gambling with YOUR time and money here ) I would think that the odds are great enough to not take the chance ~ to just go ahead and reseal it now, while it's off the car and accessible, rather than put it all back together and find you have to drop it again. Know what I mean?

The days you spend making sure of it now will be less painful than the months you'll worry about it later if you take the chance.

By the way ~ have you checked all the bolts yet? Can you see for certain none of them became stretched or bent?

Frank

I'm going to say, from distant memory, that you can use any of the 5- speed Z or ZX F-series cases interchangeably.

Swapped the shifter arms and reverse check sleeve and installed the older rear case on the newer transmission.

Seems to be a perfect match and shifts fine.

Thanks my distant Z friends for the help and suggestions.

I wasn't that clean!
Motor / trans were new and relatively clean.
Powerwashed the engine bay after I removed the L24.

Today was just muscle work wrangling the motor into the car.
All sweat.

Ignition is a Crane XR3000 and an L24 Dizzy that was reworked by Bob Ream.

Maybe, just maybe I can make some noise with it this weekend.

Engine runs :)

Leaking oil at the front cover between the sides of the front cover and the cylinder head. :(

Bummed.

At the tip of the screwdriver is the leak.
