Did you use Loctite when you installed them? Also some folks use safety wire, like this guy:

(just scroll down a bit)

I think somebody else had loose flywheel bolts a year or two ago, and I also seem to recall seeing a photo of a flywheel with all the bolts safety-wired together to keep that from happening again. Might have been AJ, but it was so long ago I don't recall now.

Well, that pump was up to no good and would eventually have caused damage to your engine, so it's good that it was replaced, anyway. I just hope the movement didn't elongate any of the bolt holes, or stretch the bolts.

Thanks for the input. When I rebuilt the engine a few years ago a friend persuaded me to use Red loctite. Of course I later needed to replace the rear seal and ended up having to use a blowtorch to get the bolts out...so I don't recommend Red on flywheel bolts.

Reusing the old bolts prob contributed to them loosening So I'm going to get new bolts at the dealer, use Blue loctite, and spend extra attention on torquing them properly. Should have done it right the first time.

Actually you are very lucky indeed! having a flywheel and clutch assembly sheer off at high rpms is no joke, there is real potential for serious bodily damage there. Back when I was a teenager, I knew a guy who nearly lost a foot when he was a passenger in a car that had the clutch fly apart.

As Mark said, it ain't funny when a flywheel or clutch lets go. I've never
had it happen to me personally, but I've seen it happen. It reminds me
of shrapnel from incoming artillery/mortars/rockets/grenades in Viet
Nam. That's how the famous drag racer Don Garlits from Tampa, in his
Swamp Rat rails, lost part of a foot exactly as Mark explained. My former
brother-in-law was luckier. That's why they use scatter shields.

(I have one for a SBC, are you interested, Clive?)

Both Clay and I have safety-wired flywheel bolts. I'm going to loctite mine in this time as well. Can't go wrong with that method, and a scatter shield (which I'm also building).
