Well I took out the 280 for a spin on Tuesday and when I left class she completely cut out when I left. I pulled over and tried to start her but nothing just kept on cranking. Put some gas in her and she would kick at the first crank but nothing. I even got more gas and added an octane booster. Then sprayed starting fluid. She ran on the starting fluid. I changed the fuel filter and tried again. Still runs on starting fluid. I checked fuel pressure te dumb way and it has it. Sprayed a good distance. So it runs on starting fluid, has fuel pressure,...??? So I'm confused. What do you guys think?

I suspect your fuel injection is not injecting fuel.

Yeah that sounds correct. So it's other whatever controls the injectors is not getting power to them or they are all clogged. If it sits long enough though it will fire up the first crank then that's it. Maybe ecu connection?

I KNOW we've had this problem before and I KNOW I've answered it. :x

Use that brain muscle! It's there for a purpose!

Not exactly same problem. I'm gonna check a few things tomorrow. It has been towed to my moms house. I'll check into tomorrow. Ill check the connection to the ecu and double check my maxi fuses. But I have spark and fuel going to the rail. So I need to find out why my injectors aren't firing.

ECU. The connector can corrode or come loose. Or the ECU itself has gone bad.

I'm not a fuelie guy, but if your fuel lines are charged, your pump is working. If enough fuel dribbles into the cylinders while the car is off, the injectors have fuel under pressure, awaiting a command of execution to begin delivering it.

SOMEthing is not telling your injectors to inject. Fix that.

On thing to try is to to clean the bullet connectors in the wiring harness bundle that sits in the center of the motor...it runs front to rear just behind the main throttle rod. If those have intermittent connections (30+ years old after all) it will kill the engine. If I remember right it runs from the thermotime switch to the ECU.

ANECDOTE: I drove my '76 280 from VA to New Orleans back in 1986 and had this problem. I remember my engine would cut out for no reason, I would have to fiddle with those connectors to get the engine to start. Just a thought.

Well I managed to get her running and back in my garage. Still having issues. First I cleaned my maxifuse block and unplugged the ecu a few times. She fired right up. Then I shut her off and back on and nothing. I then figuredit was a bad fuse block for the efi. I hooked the wires together bypassing one fuse as a test. She fired right up. Then as I was tightening the ground cable she stalled out and wouldn't start again. I unplugged the ecu and back in again and she started. Do I just drove her to the garage. I plan to wait until the engine swap before I drive her again. I might look into what you are talking Bryan. That is quite possible. Plus my gas tank is really starting to leak more. So I'm gonna wait until I can hunt down a garage that will let me do work in. So keep your eyes peeled guys. And as always thanks for all the help. Love you guys! And thanks to Chris for really working my brain. :D
