Ok so today I was changing my fuel sending unit, and noticed that my 72 240z looks to be wired for an electric fuel pump. I did some research and found that it was an option in 72 to help with vapor lock and was standard after 73. My question to anyone is should I invest the money on putting one in my car? will it help and do I need it?
Thanks

My personal opinion only: YES.

An electric pump at the tank PUSHES fuel to the engine, rather then trying to PULL it 16ft with a mechanical pump from the front. Much more efficient.

PROS: push rather than pull, no power taken from the engine (other than a minimal electrical charge from the alternator), not subject to vapor lock or engine heat, one less item needed on your engine, your car is already wired and rigged to mount one, affords yet another place to mount an additional fuel filter. *(Edit): Also, you can deliver fuel to empty carbs by simply turning the key, instead of having to crank that poor starter for 2 min to get the engine to start.

CONS: slight noise which you don't have now, more expensive to replace when it breaks down, I have heard stories about deep snow messing them up, but if you drive your Z in winter you deserve all the bad things that happen to you, anyway. *(Edit): In the case of a crash, fuel could continue to pump thru broken fuel lines, instead of stopping when the engine stalled.

You will have to determine if you want a centrifugal impeller or a diaphragm pump. Discuss that with our Bryan Little or Vinny Bedini, or Phrog, or AirJockie, or any of the guys at RDZ.

If I was building your car with your dollars, I would absolutely install an electrical pump.

Frank

MAKE SURE that you install the CORRECT fuel pump. This doesn't have to mean OEM, but one made for carbs and not EFI. There are two types of electric pumps, low and high pressure. You want a low pressure pump for carbs.

Get a filter between the tank and pump and an "IMPACT SWITCH" for a e-pump shutoff.

No, you don't need it. They changed the carburetors in 73 and that was when the vapor lock problems started. No reason to run it on round tops, and the cost, complexity, and safety issues associated with it rule it out. KISS.

Pic is 2001 orig. build on #958. Upgraded to Holly Lo press. "Red Top" pump in 2005 /NO Mech Pump on engine. Kept New Pump / fuel filter & Impact switch assy. all in the same location. Diff is a R180 / 3:55 w/OEM Salisbury Clutch Pac LSD. "RED" Limiter is 5/16 CRS hard mounted to the diff's secondary(NOT Used on Z's) twin nose holes. 1/4" buna iso pad to dampen compression and off load OEM front diff. mount & strap assy.. Very EZ to fab... 2 - 45 deg. bends, 2 - 3/8" mounting holes, a bunch of lighting holes and 1 - 1/4" buna iso pad bonded to lip. I think anyone can make their own but I did give Vinny B. a templet and a 3/8" Aluminum Blank cutout ( NO Bends or Holes) a while back so he could make them for you guys. My upgraded version is made with the same overall dimensions, however instead of 5/16" CRS I used 1/4" Titainium Plate (Ribbed) and 5/16" Silicon ISO Pad, a little tougher to fab.. A necessary upgrade for use in my '72 3.1L w/ R200 - 3:70 Quaiffe. I'll see if I can find a pic of the fab.
