May I dare? Could one of you tell Bob Sharp that I would like to ask him a few questions if he is not to busy.
Or if one of you know the arcane of the IMSA 280ZX front and rear end feel free to enlighten me
I almost know my 240Z by heart but the 280ZX is another beast!

Thanks, Boomer

I sort of expected that. Most amateur drivers do their own mechanical work and build their own car. Professional racers hire professional mechanics and simply tell those mechanics what the car is doing wrong, or what they want the car to do differently.

The mechs then modify the car until it 'works' for the driver.

Several of the Z carz which Bob raced to his six championships are now owned by Dr. Alan Robbins of SharpSite Racing in NY. They are raced in vintage events each year. The chief mechanic for those carz is our friend (and classic 1970 240Z owner) Shawn Prtchrd. I have e-mailed him and asked him to measure the rubber and wheel offset on the Z racers there for you.

Still awaiting his reply.

(Thanks Bob ~ glad you got your computer fixed! :D)

Frank

Tell you what, Boomer ~ why not contact our member Skip Panzarella? He raced Corvettes for years and recently purchased Paul Newman's old 280ZX racer, which has been restored to exact specifications.

The car was owned by Bob Sharp and Paul Newman raced it to many victories. It's in great condition today and Skip just bought it late last year. He's looking forward to racing it this coming Zeason.

Here's a link to Skip's introduction:

http://forums.ctzcc.com/viewtopic.php?t=5408

To send Skip a Private Message on this website, press on the PM (or email) balloon in his entry and ask him about the wheels on the car. He might have to measure them before he answers, because he just got the car a few months ago and hasn't raced it yet.

Frank

Do you suppose Vinny Bedini might remember, being one of the
"wrenches" on the Sharp crew? If not, I think he is in contact with
"Jasen" Jasensky, John "J.R." Mitchell, and others from the crew.
I would think that somebody in that extremely talented bunch must
remember something about that.
FWIW,..........~Rick~

Thats right, Good idea Rick. It's worth a try.
Boomer try Emailing Vinny at vinny.bedini@netzero.net
Or you can try calling his shop 860 355 1829

Good luck. :)

Yeah, I asked Vinny first. He referred me to Shawn at SharpSite Racing, but Shawn works on 240/280 racers, and I don't think they have a ZX car there anymore.

The actual PLN car now belongs to our member Skip Panzarella, but Skip just got the car and doesn't know all the specs on it yet.

We'll probably have to go to the car itself and measure it when it comes out of winter storage.

In the meantime I've asked AirJockie where we might find this info. He knows more about wheels than the Michelin Man.

(Not real sure Boomer wants to call Vinny from France, anyway! )

without looking at the car, and with no documentation online...it can't be solved. Only the team that put the car together can tell you. If they changed the diff, or the hubs, or the suspension...all stock fitments go out the window. And regardless... after you get it together, and set the ride height and corner balance everything...it's still going to be a custom fit wheel and tire...even after you decide what races you are going to run. Items like strength of wheel, materials of hub and barrel, size of rubber, what brand, and what sticky-ness tires you need for the tracks conditions, what is legal for the race you're running.....everything will decide on one thing.... how much money you have or can afford.

Boomer lives right in that area (LeMans). He might be interested in zeeing the ZX car and examining/measuring the wheels. Would that be OK, Skip?
