Specify. Why won't it go into reverse? Does it stall out? Does it grind?

It could be. Ask him the questions that I just did. WHY won't it go into reverse. What are the symptoms.

the original owner is some old lady. if i get this car for my wife i am going to have Bob Sharp sign it since it's from his dealership. for the money she wants for it i am definitely getting it no question. i just want to get an idea of what could be wrong. i think when i go to take a look i will disconnect the battery and then reconnect it. i heard that if it's the TCU that you can tell by doing that. i guess it resets it.

You should ask if the car 'physically' won't shift into reverse (linkage problem) or if it 'won't respond' to being shifted into reverse (blown transmission internals or bad relay).

(I drove a 1972 Olds Cutlass for nearly a year w/o reverse ~ it ain't fun but it can be done).

It always helps to know how much you can expect to pay BEFORE you buy the car!
