To my knowledge, from what I could find, the only 4 speed automatic that will bolt up to a 240-280 is the one from an '84 Nisan Maxima.

as far as i know there is no 4 speed auto that will bolt up to a l6 motor. the '84 maxima is a front wheel drive with a v6 motor. with a l6 motor your choices are 3 speed auto, 4 speed manual or 5 speed manual. your best choice would be to just buy my car and call it a day!! lol mike

Don't forget the Maxima was a rear wheel drive vehicle at first and I believe 85 was the first year for the V-6 front wheel drive. This is a curious question I'd like to know myself. For now, when I go to work can take my L series bell housing and match it up to the V6 I have and see if lines up, and the pilot hole fits the input shaft. :?

....and the number and length of the splines are correct............

I was told by a Z store in Ca. that the '84 gas Maxima was the only 4 speed automatic that would bolt up to a straight 6 block.

Hi Irv:
I think it's 83 and 84 - L4N71B Four Speed Automatic. They seem to have slightly different 1st and 2nd gear ratio's...but 3rd and 4th are the same.

FYI - a Post by Kim Blough is copied below - from the Old Z Car List. Kim really knows his stuff...

Hi All, (Jason, this one is for you :)

With the introduction of the 1983 model year, Nissan offered the =
four speed automatic.

The more I read about this transmission, the more I realize how neat =
it really is and how it could be a potential performer for both power =
and mileage.

The trans uses a standard "lockup" style hydraulic solenoid control =
for the converter which is factory wired for externally lock up control. =
(Overdrive "cancel" switch is stock and could be retrofitted into any Z)

The really neat thing is the overdrive ratio. These transmissions =
have a 0.686:1 OD fourth gear!!!

A 31.4% OVERDRIVE! Bring on the HP!

Quote: "...this drops engine speed by approximately 30% as compared =
to the third speed range".

The stall "torque ratio" is 2.0:1 which means that it has room for =
improvement as far as stall RPM goes.

We routinely cut domestic converters apart and change the stall =
ratio to fit our needs. The idea of modifying a stock Nissan converter =
to allow a first gear (unlocked converter) to flash to say 2500 to 3000 =
RPM is not out of the question.

With the advent of the "lockup converter" (which acts like a manual =
clutch, transferring 100% of all engine RPM to the transmission), a =
high(er) stall converter allows the hotrodder to literally "Have his =
cake and Edith too. :)

Both the driver and "Edith" will probably enjoy the reduced =
interior cabin noise levels which may allow you to hear conversation at =
normal levels.:)

The car would launch quickly using this combination of RPM and =
torque increase. This is real live torque increase, something which no =
manual clutch can do. (Jason, you won't have to "do it in the dirt" =
anymore!)

There appears to be two sets of overall gear ratios available.

One set is: (first through fourth and reverse is listed last)

2.458, 1.458, 1.00, 0.686, 2.182

The other is:

2.842, 1.542, 1.00, 0.686, 2.400

Combined with a 3.90:1 rear end, the performance envelope on BOTH =
ends of the scale would be awesome!

Using the "lower ratio" (higher numerical number) of the two =
available transmissions, the overall gear sets would be VERY close to =
the average first and final gear ratios of the typical five speed =
equipped Z car.

As for a true "top end car" why not dream a bit.

A 3.36 diff from any early 240-Z manual car would result in a final =
drive of 2.305:1!!

Using a 23.5 inch tall tire, (stock tire height for the 1970-78 Z =
car) an attainable 5500 RPM in overdrive would allow a top end of 150.37 =
mph (not including tire growth).

Freeway cruising speeds (75 MPH) would be a paltry 2750 RPMs. (30+ =
MPG at least).

Tire speed will be 2150 RPM at this speed so a minimum "VR" rated =
tire would be mandatory.

Lastly, it appears that all that is required for a shifter would be =
the stock Z car unit.

GREAT !!!!!
They are cheap enough at junk yards. The only question, do junk yards usually pull them with or without the bell housing ? Will it bolt up to a 3 sp bell housing ? Will 3 sp linkage work ? Will later V6 linkage work ? the shifter and shift quadrant should be able to be adapted.
Comments ???

Well said Carl. My 83 Maxima did move real good and smooth, miss that car. The curious question was if the 300zx tranni would. work on an L-block. Also, I swear I have seen the 280zx , most likely 83 modles with the overdrive automatics in them. They were usally the 2 tone painted ones.
