I have fantasiZed about such a swap for years.

The TT could more than triple the HP of the L24, give better balance and would actually 'add lightness'.

I'm sure someone has done it, somewhere.

HybridZ.Com probably has volumes of information on this common-sense swap. I'm sure you would have to add a computer to handle the fuel injection and ignition timing, but that shouldn't be a huge problem. The old gearbox would get replaced with the V6 5-spd or automatic unit. You MIGHT have to fabricate a custom driveshaft. No big deal.

Soundz like fun! :D

That is a GREAT post! See Irv, if it works in a 280 it should work in a 240 as well.

He has fabricated his own motor mounts, but I'm not sure that's completely necessary. Can't hurt, tho.

He has asked for "no suggestions", but one thing I might consider in such a swap would be the great, heavy-duty frame rails which our member John makes available thru BADDOG parts. Maybe not necessary either, but the V6 delivers a lot more torque than the standard L24, so eventually you might wish you had used them.

Does his DETT engine seems considerably larger than the standard V6TT, or am I imagining it? It fits, anyway.

This thread is way over my head (can you see me waving my hand at
arm's length above my head with palm downward?) I haven't gotten
beyond the L-24 engine with E-31 head yet!

39, almost 40 years constitutes a VERY slow learner!

Rick, the 300ZX cars used a nifty little 3.0-liter V6 engine, which was lighter than the straight-6 L24/26/28 series, allowed for a lower hood profile and was capable of MUCH more hp. Several of those V6s came with either a turbo or a twin turbo. They fit into the frame of an older Z with room to spare, sit farther back to shift the CoG toward the firewall, and are lighter than the original 600lb unit.

So it would make sense that swapping one into a 240Z would improve the power/weight ratio and balance of the car incredibly. The V6 engines are a lot more complicated than the L24, due to computeriZed fuel injection, turbo heat concerns, 'magic' ignition and lots of cam options.

But the result should (should) be worth the effort.
